How to Place a Rug in a Room

A well-placed rug can add a touch of class and style to any room in the home. It’s one of the best tools that you have available. When they are properly placed, a rug can add warmth, sophistication and show your personality in the room. While they may be one of the most expensive additions, they really do lift a room. That said, it’s important that you choose carefully to make sure that the rug is properly placed. Rugs are a great addition to many rooms in your home and they are not just suitable for hard floors, they can work well when placed on carpets too. They offer a great layer of protection for your carpets and perfect for high traffic areas.

Placing a Rug in a Living Room

Rug placement in the living room will depend on the size of the space and the layout of your other larger furniture pieces. There are typically three options when it comes to placing your rug in your living room. If the room is quite small, you can opt for a smaller rug that ‘floats’ between the furniture but sits underneath a coffee table. If you want to make the room look more spacious you will need a larger rug that fits under all of the furniture. For larger living rooms the rug can be used to frame the space. All furniture should be placed onto the rug.

How to Use a Rug in a Bedroom

The size of the rug in the bedroom depends on how big the bed is. There are lots of options when it comes to bedroom rug placement, but the most common way is to place the rug partially underneath the bed. This gives you a soft surface to step onto. For smaller rooms you might want to try putting the rug at the foot of the bed and to help add greater consistency to the colour scheme. If you don’t want a rug in the bedroom, you can opt for runners either side of the bed.

Should you put a Rug Under a Dining Room Table?

Placement of rugs in the dining room will depend on how the dining table is positioned. Ideally you will want the rug to sit underneath the dining table. Make sure that it is large enough to accommodate all of the chairs as well, even when they have been pulled out, so they are not half on half off.

Always remember to use the right sized rug. One that’s too small can make a space look disjointed. If you are in doubt, it’s always best to opt for a larger rug that will tie everything together and give the illusion of space.
