Success at International Design & Architecture Awards 2021

We’re thrilled to announce that The Design buzz founder and Creative Director, Shalini Misra, was recognised at the prestigious International Design & Architecture Awards 2021. Winning not one, but two awards, Shalini’s work triumphed in both the Luxury Residence and Global and Residential Property £20 Million Plus (property value) categories.

The Challenge

The project that garnered both awards was the St John’s Wood Residence, which Shalini worked on as Interior Designer and Architect. Home to Abbey Road Studios and Lords Cricket Ground, St John’s Wood is a well-known and much-loved area in the heart of northwest London. Despite the Victorian villa previously being stripped of its original features, Shalini was tasked with creating a home that displayed London and local craftsmanship with a global influence, combining modern luxurious comfort with contemporary and vintage art.

The brief demanded that each space must have its own unique identity and purpose while ensuring that there was a seamless flow between all aspects of the property. Further, Shalini was required to facilitate flexible living, with open and communal areas on both the upper and lower floors, and deliver a bright, spacious and luxurious feel.

Award-Winning Design

Redesigning the layout to maximise the amount of space available and ensure low between spaces, the team at Shalini Misra Ltd set about bringing the client’s vision to life. Utilising the whole of the first floor as a main bedroom suite, with a further three bedrooms and en suites on the second floor, Shalini coupled functionality with form to facilitate modern, luxurious living.

On the ground floor, structural changes were made to create a more open environment, with the staircase making way for a red tiled life shaft. As well as future-proofing the property and maximising convenience, this increased the amount of usable space and allowed the team to implement exquisite design choices.

Furniture and Décor

To incorporate great British craftsmanship, Shalini adorned the space with characterful cornices and plaster moulding, along with bespoke cabinet making and unique furniture. Creating a palette of tactile quality, a variety of designer pieces were incorporated in the décor, including soft, cashmere Oyuna throws and contemporary statement lighting.

Balancing the old and new via a mix of vintage and modern pieces, Shalini incorporated decorative accessories from a number of designers, including Claudia Barbari napkins, glasses by Lotus Arts de Vivre and Anna New York Cake Stands and Coasters. In addition to this, Casarialto glasses and Artel glasses injected a tactile, colourful vibe into the home, while Richard Brendon cups encapsulated the mix of modern and classic styles perfectly.
